When people are asked to describe their favourite vacation spot, responses often include “by the lake” or “by the ocean.” This is not surprising; it is a widely shared notion that being by the water makes us happy. We feel calm, content, and overall, just better. I have always recognized this, but never have I experienced the positive effects of water as significantly as I do here, in Bear River.

Blue Mind: a mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peace, unity, and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life in the moment.
Having Bear River as my back yard, (quite literally- the river is metres behind my house), I strongly identify with the “Blue Mind” phenomenon. Likewise, I see how it impacts visitors to Bear River who, time and again, express feeling “peaceful and happy” during their visit although they are “not sure why.” In addition, I am often asked why artists have, for decades, been moving to our tidal village. Any environment that brings out our “blue mind” would be an ideal stimulus for creativity, would it not?
